Good art takes darkness to accentuate the light.

If your life feels like it is made up of only darkness and chaos, let's find the contrast so you can start to see it as the good art it already is.

Before I was a counselor, I wore a lot of hats. Even today, I like to try them on from time to time to see if they still fit.

After graduating with my bachelor's in Human Development, I spent the early part of my professional life as a singer-songwriter and creative writer, still trying to figure out who I was in this adulting world I wasn't sure I liked very much.

After my son was born, and out of a desire to capture his life in photos, I became a professional photographer and eventually a professional digital painter. No matter the form of art I chose to dedicate my life to, light and shadow created the depth that made it beautiful. My son was diagnosed with special needs and autism, and as I learned early on, this was not your typical parenting situation. As he and I learned to navigate this new world together, I noticed a lack of materials for children on the spectrum, so I wrote a book. Bad Sheep was born out of my desire to help other children name their emotions.

However, when I was around other parents of special needs children, we all put on a "keeping it together" face. Talking about our struggles was only phrases in passing that didn't come close to covering the weight of real life. "I'm good." Or, "It's been a hard day, but we'll make it through." On rare occasions, I'd find a peer crying in the car after school drop-off. We needed each other, but we were afraid that what we thought and felt was somehow different from everyone else's, or wrong. That, shared and mostly unspoken, is what led me to create a podcast with a friend about parenting special children, in a way that didn't degrade the child but uplifted the parent.

Light and Shadow.

I realized the podcast wasn't enough. I went back to school, earned my Master of Science in Clinical Mental Health Counseling, and became a National Certified Counselor. I'm currently an Associate Licensed Counselor, practicing under the supervision of Kim Allfrey, LPC-S, while I complete my hours toward full licensure.

Wildwood was built out of my desire to help people feel less isolated in their struggles and to build the skills that carry them through. This isn't about being broken. It's about being seen, just as any type of art requires a blending of light and darkness to become a beautiful whole.

I tell clients I'm not in the fixing business. I've tripped over my own baggage more than once and gotten back up crying, laughing, and trying to figure out if I broke my leg.

If that's the kind of counselor you want, I'm your gal.

Change finds you whether you invite it or not. A diagnosis, a divorce, a kid who needs something different than what the manual promised, a version of yourself you didn't see coming. I work with people in the middle of that: women and moms carrying too much, caregivers running on empty, people rebuilding after anxiety, depression, burnout, or a life that stopped looking like the plan.

If any of that is where you are, reach out. I'd like to help you find the contrast. I'd like to hear your story, too.
